When one thinks of the people protecting the waters that surround New York City, the Fire Department of New York is probably not the first group to come to mind. Living in NYC it’s easy to forget that, unless you live in the Bronx, you live on an island. Manhattan sits just off the southern tip of New York State, sandwiched by the Hudson and East rivers. Those rivers spill out into the New York Harbor, home to Staten Island, Ellis Island, and the Statue of Liberty. Brooklyn and Queens occupy the easternmost part of Long Island. They also border the East River, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Long Island Sound, and are home to countless canals, bays, harbors, and more.

Just as they do on land in the Five Boroughs, the FDNY is there, safeguarding all of New York City’s waterways, ready to answer the call from their station in Brooklyn’s Navy Yard. Aiding them in their work is an impressive fleet of patrol and emergency response vehicles, tools, and even Mustang Survival Classic Flotation Bomber Jackets.

Earlier this year, we were fortunate enough to spend a rainy winter day with them on Marine 6 patrolling the New York Harbor, and to get to know the ships, gear, and great people who keep NYC’s waterways free from harm for all of us. Thank you to the FDNY for having us and for all that you do to help ensure we can continue our urban explorations safely.

Columbia Sportswear unveiled last month an industry-first fabric technology that could raise the bar for outdoor lifestyle and winter recreation apparel this season: Omni-Heat Black Dot, a culmination of warming innovations that began with the introduction of Columbia’s Omni-Heat Reflective lining ten years ago. As temps began to drop, we began to take note.

Columbia Sportswear’s Omni-Heat Reflective lining was a revolutionary approach to lightweight insulation that has been a pillar for the brand and created many converts. They say this new tech acts as a heat magnet, capturing solar heat and enhancing thermal efficiency, and thereby reducing heat loss, perfect for anyone who runs cold blooded.

As the industry’s first “external thermal shield” built to protect from the cold, Columbia’s Black Dot technology captures the sun’s solar heat to keep people warmer, says the brand, much like its Omni-Heat internal lining captures and reflects heat from the inside. And with people needing to be outside now more than ever, this collection could be a welcome addition to the winter wardrobe. We’re going to test it out just to make sure. Of course, the three pieces in the line also feature double-weave water resistant fabric and are imbued with other winter Columbia Sportswear outerwear technologies as well.

// Barrett Spur Black Dot Parka ($600): The Barrett Spur features a full suite of Columbia technologies including an Omni-Heat Black Dot, advanced thermal-reflective Omni-Heat 3D lining, and Omni-Heat Stretch Insulation with 700 fill-power responsibly sourced down and a plush faux-fur trim.

Stone Island has a new innovative earth friendly jacket line that is manufactured from human made ‘engineered suede’. This Long Jacket has a complexed formula of materials using 50% Polyamide and 50% Polyurethane. They really nailed it on this jacket with a hood that has a detachable felt cuff and large Stone Island lettering.
