When one thinks of the people protecting the waters that surround New York City, the Fire Department of New York is probably not the first group to come to mind. Living in NYC it’s easy to forget that, unless you live in the Bronx, you live on an island. Manhattan sits just off the southern tip of New York State, sandwiched by the Hudson and East rivers. Those rivers spill out into the New York Harbor, home to Staten Island, Ellis Island, and the Statue of Liberty. Brooklyn and Queens occupy the easternmost part of Long Island. They also border the East River, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Long Island Sound, and are home to countless canals, bays, harbors, and more.

Just as they do on land in the Five Boroughs, the FDNY is there, safeguarding all of New York City’s waterways, ready to answer the call from their station in Brooklyn’s Navy Yard. Aiding them in their work is an impressive fleet of patrol and emergency response vehicles, tools, and even Mustang Survival Classic Flotation Bomber Jackets.

Earlier this year, we were fortunate enough to spend a rainy winter day with them on Marine 6 patrolling the New York Harbor, and to get to know the ships, gear, and great people who keep NYC’s waterways free from harm for all of us. Thank you to the FDNY for having us and for all that you do to help ensure we can continue our urban explorations safely.

At the Historic Motorsport International (HMI) Show today, Dunlop signaled their optimism in the future of the sector.

The HMI Show, held in London, sees the wide range of companies involved in the Classic Car and Historic Motorsport markets meet to prepare for the coming season.

Dunlop is celebrating its modern-day successes, such as 2017 wins in the Le Mans and Nurburgring 24h, but the tire company is also a major supporter of historic racing having recently confirmed its commitment to the continued supply of authentic 1950s and 1960s racing tires.

This commitment means that cars racing at iconic events such as the Le Mans Classic and Goodwood Festival of Speed can continue to use the original specification of the tire. This leads to handling characteristics that are exactly as the cars were in period, which would not be possible if the cars used Dunlop’s modern tire range.

In the Historic Racing market, Dunlop service over 30 events a year. This is managed by long-time Dunlop Service partner, HP Tyres.

Speaking on the HMI Conference Stage on behalf of Dunlop and HP Tyres, James Bailey outlined the importance of authenticity:

“Historic racing is booming, as circuits realize that nostalgia can draw more spectators than some modern races and seasoned racers choose the investment potential, and driving rewards, of a historic, classic or vintage car. There is a genuine feel-good interest in nostalgia, and event promoters are capitalizing on this’ explained Bailey.

‘Innovative event promotion is key to the continued success of historic racing. This year is the 20th Goodwood Revival, and the fastidious attention to detail of such events means that authenticity matters. That’s why Dunlop believes in the FIA’s Appendix K regulations, which insist on authentic period tires. We could easily develop a tire that makes these cars considerably faster, but we put our ‘go faster’ instincts on hold for this market and produce tires with the correct period performance. That matters, as the tire is the last balance of performance factor in historic racing. The level of car development may be higher than in period, leading to more power, but if all the cars have the same contact patch and same compound then the authenticity of racing is preserved”

Dunlop supply tires in the same designs as used in the 1950 and 1960s Le Mans and Touring Car events, meaning ‘fan favorite’ cars ranging from Jaguar D-Types to Lotus Cortinas and Alfa Romeo GTAs can race in a truly authentic style.

In addition to the 1950s and 1960s ranges, Dunlop introduced a new tire for 1970s and 1980s cars last year. The new Sports Classic has a different philosophy to Dunlop’s classic race tires. Designed for road use, it may have a classic look and feel, but it is combined with modern handling and braking performance – important for road car drivers using their cherished classics on public road

Porsche begins anniversary year with a New Year Reception

Stuttgart. Fast. Puristic. Emotive.

For the past 70 years, the Porsche brand has been synonymous with sports car construction at the very highest level. The first vehicle to bear the Porsche name was registered on June 8, 1948: It was the 356 “No.1” Roadster. This is the day on which the Porsche brand was born. Type 356 turned Ferry Porsche’s dream of a sports car into a reality. “His vision at that time embodied all of the values that still define the brand to this day”, said Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG, at yesterday’s New Year Reception at the Porsche Museum. Representatives from the state of Baden-Württemberg as well as from the city of Stuttgart and the worlds of politics, economics, and society, joined Porsche to celebrate the beginning of its anniversary year with the slogan “70 years of the Porsche sports car”.

“Tradition is a commitment. Without our tradition and without our core values, we would not be where we are today”, explained Blume. “We plan to uphold the standard of technical excellence set by Ferry Porsche well into the future. Intelligent dynamic mobility has a great future ahead of it. And we have the solid technological expertise, creative employees and unique team spirit to be involved. We have what it takes to ensure that the Porsche brand continues to fascinate – even in another 70 years.”

The history of the Porsche brand begins in 1948. Yet the foundation of the sports car manufacturer is built upon the life’s work of Professor Ferdinand Porsche – work which his son Ferry then continued. Ferdinand Porsche had already designed pioneering innovations for the automotive industry as early as the start of the last century. In 1900, he built an electric car with a wheel hub drive known as the Lohner-Porsche, a vehicle on which he would then base the world’s first all-wheel-drive passenger car. In the same year, he created a template for hybrid vehicles with the development of a mixed petrol-electric powertrain. In 1931, Ferdinand Porsche founded his own engineering office. The “Berlin-Rome Car” showcased in 1939 was the beginning of his idea for a sports car bearing the Porsche name, although this dream was only realized by his son Ferry in 1948 with the Type 356.

The successor model to the 356, the Porsche 911 designed by Ferry Porsche’s son Ferdinand Alexander, finally gave the company its breakthrough as one of the leading manufacturers of sports cars in the world, both from a technical and a design perspective. The Porsche 911, presented to the global public for the first time in 1963, has now been built over a million times. “Although the 911 has been consistently developed in the intervening decades and enhanced many times over with new, innovative technologies, no other vehicle has managed to retain its original essence in the same way as the 911”, says Blume. “All Porsche models to be developed now and in the future are based on this sports car. As the centerpiece of the brand, the 911 has become the sports car of dreams, winning the collective heart of enthusiasts all over the world.”

The future of Porsche sports cars is already coming up to the starting line in the form of the Mission E, the first purely electrically driven technology champion from Zuffenhausen. This concept vehicle combines the distinctive emotional design of a Porsche, exceptional driving performance, and forward-thinking everyday functionality. The four-door model with four individual seats delivers a system performance of over 440 kW (600 hp) and a range of more than 500 km, acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 3.5 seconds and a charging time of around 15 minutes for 80 percent of the electrical energy required. Porsche has invested around one billion euro in this futuristic project, creating more than 1,200 additional jobs just at the headquarters in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, where the Mission E will be built. “Porsche will always be Porsche – the leading brand for exclusive, sporty mobility”, reinforces Blume.

Porsche is celebrating this year’s anniversary with activities around the world. On February 3 “The Porsche Effect” will open at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. In Germany, the first “70 years of the Porsche sports car” exhibition will open from March 20–31, at “DRIVE, the Volkswagen Group Forum” in Berlin. The Porsche Museum will also be holding its own anniversary celebrations with a comprehensive special exhibition opening on June 9. On the same day, Porsche will be inviting sports car fans to its “Sports Car Together Day” at all of its sites around the world. For the weekend of June 16–17, the sports car manufacturer will host employees, residents of the Zuffenhausen district and prospective customers to a public celebration in and around the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart. The “Festival of Speed” held from July 12–15, at the Goodwood race track in the UK, will also celebrate the anniversary, as will the “Rennsport Reunion” in California from September 27–30. The celebrations will conclude with the “Sound Night” event to be held for the first time in the Porsche Arena in Stuttgart on October 13.

Using a combination of sensors and cameras, both inside and outside the car, the vehicle can move from place to place, allowing people to shop without the need of staff or even a cashier. The car itself can be customized to show off its partner company’s branding, while the shelves on the inside come with customizable tags, allowing you to display anything from baked goods, to fast food, to groceries, to even flowers. The car’s interiors stay refrigerated to make sure your food stays fresh.

Frank Jung (40) took over management of the company archives. He succeeds Dieter Landenberger, who moved to Volkswagen AG in August 2017. Previously, Jung spent six years as head of the Tradition division at Recaro Holding GmbH in Stuttgart. He has close ties to the Porsche company and to Zuffenhausen: Frank Jung’s family founded the “Stuttgarter Karosseriewerk Reutter & Co” – a close partner of Porsche since the design office was set up in 1931. Along with the Porsche Museum, the corporation’s “memory” forms the bulk of the content for historic public relations work. Frank Jung will drive the digitalization of the company archives, as well as the focus on future-oriented requirements.

Mayk Wienkötter (43) has been strengthening the Porsche Product and Technical Communications Team since September 2017 in the role of Spokesperson for Electromobility, Future Technologies, and Connected Car. Previously, Wienkötter worked for over six years as Head of Product and Technical Communications at Jaguar Land Rover in Germany. The trained TV journalist also brings 14 years of experience as an editor and presenter for various automotive shows, including SAT.1 Automagazin, Auto Bild TV, and SWR Startklar.

Also since September 2017, Tanja Deutschenbaur (28) has been working as Press Spokesperson for Finance and IT, and for Porsche Digital. After joining the company in 2015, she was initially responsible for internal communications before becoming PR Specialist responsible for topic management in the Porsche Corporate Communications team. She studied communication science and communication management in Münster and Hohenheim.

Auto show attendees in Detroit will be transported to California’s Big Sur, the South of France and England’s Cadwell Park racing circuit
As part of the ongoing marketing launch of the all-new 2018 Kia Stinger, next week Kia Motors America (KMA) will begin offering four-dimension virtual reality test drive at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. The immersive Kia 4D Stinger Experience virtually puts consumers behind the wheel and allows them to feel the speed, agility, responsiveness, and handling of the highest-performance production model in Kia’s history through visual, audio and sensory cues. For those outside of Detroit, virtual test drives are now available at Kia.com and jauntvr.com as well as the Jaunt app, accessible on major VR and mobile platforms and downloadable to Android and iOS devices.

At NAIAS, participants will enter the Kia 4D Stinger Experience and, after a brief introduction which details the Stinger’s six-year journey from concept car to reality, travel through the provincial towns of Southern France, up and down the iconic Pacific Coast Highway along California’s Big Sur, and visit the Cadwell Park motor racing circuit in England.

“With a 0-60 time of 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 167 miles per hour, the Stinger is like nothing anyone has ever seen from Kia before and the 4D Stinger Experience takes virtual reality way beyond the visual to connect with consumers and enthusiasts at the visceral level,” said Saad Chehab, vice president, marketing communications, KMA. “Every twist and turn, every rush of acceleration and every braking run is experienced as if you, the driver, are in command. Stinger is a vehicle that you need to feel to appreciate truly.”

During the four-dimensional virtual test drive, the voices of Kia representatives – including Kia’s president and chief design officer, Peter Schreyer, and president of vehicle test & high-performance development, Albert Biermann – emerge from the Stinger’s premium sound system and provide an overview of the test drive locations as well as the Stinger’s design, performance and high-end features. Five projectors will display the immersive virtual test drive onto three projection screens and the specially programmed floor, with haptic feedback produced by a modified suspension rig that matches every twist and turn of the road, allows Stinger’s true Gran Turismo spirit to shine. From a rapid ascent up the California coast to hairpin turns on mountain roads high above the South of France, Stinger’s sure-footed confidence and nimble ride and handling are on full display.
