We’ve got our eyes on a new-ish pickup truck bed popup camper coming out of Denver. And while you may think it’s a saturated market, don’t worry, there’s still plenty of room for innovation.

And like all good start ups, Tune definitely solves some problems. The 360-lb. Tune M1 potentially raises the bar on weight-to-space ratio, comfort, and functional versatility for pick-up truck based adventurers. Founded by a team of outdoor industry and engineering veterans, Tune Outdoor is a direct-to-consumer brand launching a premium lightweight pickup truck camper to a growing market seemingly still hungry for innovation, value, and product evolution.

Tune Outdoor unveiled its innovative new entry to the growing lightweight truck camper market and we can’t wait to get out and test one. The striking Tune M1 pop-up canopy truck topper seems to blend design innovation, and simplicity. The brand said a streamlined production process delivers an industry-best weight-to-space ratio, exceptional performance, and a stylish, modern aesthetic, targeting the burgeoning vehicle-based adventure and active outdoor community.

Employing durable, lightweight materials, Tune engineers developed an intuitive design that puts the Tune M1’s base model weight starting at only 360 lbs. It also features a patented wing-wall design with flared sidewalls, a market first, and a fully vertical pop-top, providing more cubic living space than any lightweight truck camper on the market. This exceptional weight-to-space ratio broadens the Tune M1’s utility across a wide range of outdoor and offroad conditions, making it an ideal solution for comfortable camping outdoors, whether you’re fishing, surfing, climbing, kayaking, biking, snowmobiling, hunting, and more.

“We designed a canopy truck topper that hits the sweet spot of lightweight, functionality, and feel, allowing you to access your favorite backcountry places with enough space to bring your toys and gear and still camp comfortably,” says company president Sean Kepler, who has held executive leadership positions at The North Face, VF Outdoor, Reef, and Crocs. Tune’s team of outdoor industry veterans and engineers spent more than two years perfecting Tune’s design and production process.

Tune’s structure incorporates an aluminum frame, injected ultra-strong composite corner brackets, a clean polyester pop-top canopy extension, and easy-to-fit, FRP honeycomb paneling. Each camper comes with three aluminum or glass awning doors that allow for easy access from any angle, low-power interior halo lighting, and over 440 feet of universal T-track on the interior, exterior, and roof for unlimited customization. A large sleeping loft allows users to sleep sideways, while maintaining 6’4’’ to 6’10” of stand-up headroom (depending on truck model). The bed and living area can be enjoyed simultaneously, opening the entire cabin to camp living – from hanging out and cooking, to toy hauling and remote working.

“Tune has engineered a product that is affordable, highly functional, and efficient to build, which empowers outdoor enthusiasts to comfortably enjoy their favorite off-the-path places to play and stay,” adds Kepler.

The M1 is being sold direct to consumers at tuneoutdoor.com with a base model price of $12,999 with an introductory price of $10,999 for a limited time.

Tune innovated a patent-pending industrial design solution that allows the Tune M1 to assemble quickly and easily, translating to fast installation lead times and efficient after-market service. The Tune M1 camper easily integrates with nearly any pickup chassis—from Tacomas to the Ford Lightning—providing unparalleled performance and comfort without extensive modifications.

The co-founder of Tune is an old friend of mine and one of the original inventors and partners at Backcountry Access. He’s got a depth and background in the “living and playing outdoors” industry that is tough to match, along with a background in engineering and bringing real world technical products to life. Tons of respect for those guys.

When one thinks of the people protecting the waters that surround New York City, the Fire Department of New York is probably not the first group to come to mind. Living in NYC it’s easy to forget that, unless you live in the Bronx, you live on an island. Manhattan sits just off the southern tip of New York State, sandwiched by the Hudson and East rivers. Those rivers spill out into the New York Harbor, home to Staten Island, Ellis Island, and the Statue of Liberty. Brooklyn and Queens occupy the easternmost part of Long Island. They also border the East River, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Long Island Sound, and are home to countless canals, bays, harbors, and more.

Just as they do on land in the Five Boroughs, the FDNY is there, safeguarding all of New York City’s waterways, ready to answer the call from their station in Brooklyn’s Navy Yard. Aiding them in their work is an impressive fleet of patrol and emergency response vehicles, tools, and even Mustang Survival Classic Flotation Bomber Jackets.

Earlier this year, we were fortunate enough to spend a rainy winter day with them on Marine 6 patrolling the New York Harbor, and to get to know the ships, gear, and great people who keep NYC’s waterways free from harm for all of us. Thank you to the FDNY for having us and for all that you do to help ensure we can continue our urban explorations safely.

The latest feature in Vanish’s Wild Ingenuity™ Interview series is here! This week we shine the spotlight on our exclusive conversation with Robert ‘Bernie’ Bernthal, the founder of the Bozeman, Montana x Tokyo, Japan-based technical outerwear company, Beringia.

Launched in the Fall of 2019, Beringia is a ‘development-driven brand that draws equally from design ideation, technical innovation, and advanced fiber and fabric engineering’. Prior to successfully launching Beringia, Bernie co-founded Duckworth, the only 100% Made-in-USA Merino wool clothing company, and has also played major roles in providing Brand and Marketing direction for outdoor powerhouses K2 and the SWATCH group, to name a few.

While Bernthal’s work experience is certainly commendable, he’ll be the first to tell you his story and Beringia’s span WELL beyond the confines of any office. As you’ll find out in this interview, Bernie is a true pioneer of the outdoor industry whose passion for nature and outdoor recreation has taken him on a multitude of worldly adventures over many decades. Through these experiences and shared passions of skiing, surfing, mountain climbing, and mother nature, Bernie’s formed friendships with like-minded folk – from across Europe to Japan – that have helped him propel Beringia into a reality.

We’ll leave it there and let Bernie takeover in sharing his perspective on Nature-Culture-Future…Strap in and get ready to enjoy the latest Wild Ingenuity™ adventure!

NATURE
Tell us a bit about yourself, your company/scope of work, and how nature is woven into your product strategy…

Bernie: I left NY at 18 (1978) to move to France to play soccer in the French Professional league, I came back to the US and played 3 more years before realizing that we spent our time in the grimmest, darkest places. When I saw the Alps, it was over, I had to be up in those mountains and live the outdoor (nature) life of doing rad shit in the outdoors. This was the early 80’s so I guess we kinda turned the outdoor/nature calling into the “outdoor industry”. We did it at a time when you could ski powder and live cheap. We imported and sold and marketed the best US-made Outdoor gear in the Alps – Switzerland, it was a way to pay the bills and get free gear for our adventures…

1978 – Limoges FC – first American pro in the French Pro League // Photo provided by Robert ‘Bernie’ Bernthal

1984 – Chamonix – fist Telemark decent of Couloir Barbey // Photo: Bob Mazarei

NATURE (continued)

Bernie: As Americans, we grow up surrounded by incredible “brands”, and growing up in the 70’s – 80’s we had amazing music and art to flank our sports…it became a culture. Chasing powder, climbing, surf, and music was what we did and it has become an industry. It’s fucken incredible and we are insanely lucky to live a life and make a living doing it. The sports/ activities that are done in connection with nature take you to a deeper place, “archaic techniques of ecstasy” / in the zone. It’s no wonder that people in these crazy times are desperately trying to get to something real. Every brand we have created and work with has to be real, no posers, they have to credible and back their shit up. Once the companies/brands lose their soul and their reason to exist, other than making money, it’s over.

We founded Beringia with our Japanese partners because they make incredibly good gear, functional beauty and we share a common passion for design connected to the mountains and oceans where we live and play. Over the years we grew our expertise in textile function and particularly wool. Our recent projects with the ancient wool/textile region of Bihsu, Japan is leading to some breakthroughs that make us really happy and proud. Sustainable – Regenerated fine wool textiles made by hand, very perfect, and without the use of many harmful chemicals the commodity brands use.

2011 – Backcountry ski touring in Nelson BC.
CULTURE
Where do you go for inspiration and what out there in current culture is creating the best or most interesting vibes to motivate you?

Bernie: Really good design. Anything made with wool, the process to the final product. Kinda obvious and vanilla. The Japanese outdoor/street/fashion/textile scene is a pretty cool collision of styles that is producing an interesting aesthetic.

FUTURE
What does the future look like for your work and what’s on your mind as you look forward?

Bernie: Great timing to ask this question. I will never stop working and will always be looking to bring newness and change. I want to disrupt the commodity brands, find new, international, interesting like-minded people and brands to do cool stuff with to keep us young and active. It’s also inspiring to see the trending collision of sorts on the way between outdoor, technical, and fashion industries.

Town Hall Outdoor Co was founded in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, by real parents who wanted better, more sustainable choices in kids’ clothing. Coincidentally, they also had many years of experience in the outdoor apparel industry, and tapped into their expertise to create apparel specifically made for kids. At the dawn of this new ski season, we sat down with co-founder Robin Hall to find out how it’s being done.

Tell us a little bit about your background in the industry?

I moved to Colorado in 2003 for a job at Vail Resorts in Finance. Following a few years there, I realized I wanted to get back to feeling and touching product and had fallen in love with the outdoor industry. I noticed a job at Smartwool in Steamboat Springs, CO at their headquarters and was lucky enough to get the job and move our little family to the Yampa Valley. Having five roles in 11 years at Smartwool was quite a beautiful ride and I learned deeply about the industry, outdoor apparel and passion-based, purpose-built brands. When the brand announced its move to Denver in 2018, our family of four couldn’t leave Steamboat. We had to give back to this community and keep outdoor industry jobs and knowledge in the Yampa Valley. So two other passionate guys in town and I co-founded Town Hall and we launched in the summer of 2021.

What does this brand mean to you?

To me, this brand means everything. It means hope, hard work, inspiration, partnership and family. For this community that we’ve gathered around us, I think it means passion, fun, a warm hug and a high five. We make durable, high quality gear and are helping to build a healthier planet. We want kids to love outside, whether that means catching snowflakes on your tongue or ripping park laps. Everyone is welcome at Town Hall, for the love of the planet and the love of community.

Why kids apparel? Why now?

The planets collided when Jay Lambert and I, both with deep histories in the outdoor industry, came together with a savvy entrepreneur, Joe Solomon, in Steamboat and founded Town Hall in 2020. Between the three of us, we have 6 kids under 16 who love to get after it outside. We wanted a better choice for our kids’ apparel. For so many brands, kids’ apparel is an afterthought; often a cheap, shrunken-down version of adult gear. We wanted to use our years of experience in outdoor apparel to create a new standard in outerwear, built specifically with kids in mind. Kids aren’t mini-adults. They are full-size versions of themselves, who need clothes built around their unique needs. Durability? That’s paramount. Our designs and brand are deeply rooted in ‘kidsumer insights’ and our mountain town kids are informing and testing every decision we make, to ensure they love it and it lasts. We’re all about building quality gear that lets kids find joy in the outdoors, and stay warm and comfortable while doing it.

How will you differentiate yourself?

Alongside our deep connection to community and the planet, our products and designs set us apart from the few, other kid-focused, domestic gear brands in the space. Designed and tested deep in an outdoor-rich community, we make purpose-built and fresh designs that are made to last through hundreds of adventures outside. Our color blocking, color pallette and ‘I-Spy-Stripes’ are unique, forward-thinking and appeal to a wide range of kids and adults alike. At one of our first Kidsumer Insights sessions in 2020, when asked what they were looking for in a ski jacket, a 14-year-old promptly said ‘I just want to be able to find my friends on the mountain….and my mom does too (with an eye-roll).’ And with that, the I-Spy-Stripes were born. Our first season, we deliberately chose colors that were gender inclusive so that every kid felt comfortable in our gear and when an older brother was ready to Hand-Me-Up their gear to their younger sister, she would be delighted to wear it too. One year in, we heard some feedback from the little gals that they wanted some more feminine colors, so we obliged. We top off our fun colors and designs with supreme durability and thoughtful, functional features, like magnetic closures for small, mitten-covered hands and pit zips, which not many kid jackets have.

What are you doing to get more kids outdoors or to make winter sports more accessible?

We want every kid to love outside. And, to be honest, it is very uncomfortable for us to produce ski/ride jackets that cost $195, despite being right in the middle of the going rate for kids’ outerwear and due to production costs with sustainable materials. So, we have created a more approachable piece in the Around Town Cold Weather Jacket ($155) that has more warmth, but fewer ski/ride features for that kiddo in Chicago who walks to school in the mornings and skis a few times in the winter. In addition, we are launching a formal Hand-Me-Up program next year where kids can return jackets that they have outgrown and we will help ensure they get into the hands of kids that need them for a more affordable price. We have developed deep partnerships with great organizations that help more kids get outside – Integrated Community in Steamboat Springs and Boys and Girls Club of NW Colorado. We have sponsored a Steamboat Soccer Club team, helped teach young women how to mountain bike with the Cycle Effect and give time and effort to the SOS Outreach, which provides youth with powerful outdoor adventures and mentorship.

What makes designing for kids challenging or unique?

Kids tell it like it is and we love that. ‘That color is ugly. I would never wear that. This is soft and cozy. Can you make this pocket bigger to hold my stuffy?’ In our ‘Kidsumer Insights’ sessions, we rally big groups of kids sitting on blankets in the park with lemonade and trail mix and ask them gobs of questions – what jackets they like and don’t like, what features they need and don’t need, how they shop and their thoughts on climate change. That informs every decision we make and then we have them test the heck out of it in our backyard in the Rocky Mountains. Kids are tough consumers – they are rough on their gear, the young ones are not often on social media (thankfully!) and the acquisition cycle is shorter. We welcome them to the brand and then they grow out of our apparel. But, we build our gear with grow seams and extra durability so they can get more wears out of it and they are encouraged to pass it along to a friend, after writing their name on the Hand-Me-Up label. Perhaps due to all of the nuances of making solid kids’ gear, we truly feel that kids haven’t been served well in the past. Parents want to stay outside and play all day and nothing ruins a family fun day like a cold, wet child. So, we are finding that by making long-lasting, feature-rich gear, kids and their parents are having more fun outside, for longer. We live in a unique little community in the mountains and we’re honored to get to design gear for kids who love to be outside, whether walking in the alleys to school with friends or skiing the local ski hill under the lights on a Friday night. All in all, designing for and working with kids is a complete joy.

What are you doing to offset your environmental footprint?

When we started Town Hall, sustainability was a guiding principle and we continue to deeply invest in ensuring that we are doing the right thing for the planet with every decision we make. We use recycled materials in all of our products, from the zipper pulls to the down in our puffies. Our Mountain Town Winter Jacket is made with roughly 98% recycled materials – the only trims that aren’t recycled are the waterproof zippers, snaps and velcro (and we’re working on those!). We practice responsible packaging and handling as well. We don’t ship from the factory in polybags, don’t automatically apply hangtags and if you live in Steamboat, chances are that our kids will deliver your order on their bikes. We have a five-year Sustainability Strategic Plan which we are tracking to and next in the plan is assessing certifications so that we can better measure our impact and develop a baseline to improve in the future. We are constantly evaluating our impact on the planet, both with consumers and our partners. As far as offsetting our environmental footprint, we know that buying carbon offsets can sometimes be taboo. But, the truth of the matter is that we are creating a product and there will be an impact on the planet. So, our goal is to get as much greenhouse gas emission as we can out of the supply chain and daily operations, and then buy offsets in a very Town Hall community way – investing in riparian measures along the Yampa River, getting a team of kids to plant trees in northwestern Colorado, etc. We give 3% of net revenue per year to community and sustainability efforts. In the future, we intend to not only offset our impact on the planet but go above and beyond by giving more than we take and being Planet Positive.

In the outdoor gear world, innovation and sustainability are driving forces. FORGE+BOND leverages an advanced thermoplastic composite material called FUSIONFIBER, a proprietary material made with long-chain polymers. FORGE+BOND’s nylon-based thermoplastic material means the material can literally be made and remade forever, and the net goal is to waste nothing.

FORGE+Bond is aiming to transform the cycling space through its responsibility-first approach. “Our ultimate goal is to inspire others to join us in creating a world where nothing is wasted–not only in materials but also in resources and time,” said Wheadon. Everything from raw materials to final products is built in the USA, ensuring performance, durability, reliability, and sustainability. Even the production process is designed to eliminate waste.

Since FORGE+BOND doesn’t use any epoxies or resins (which need to be burned off before recycling and are typical of other carbon fiber bicycle component manufacturers), FORGE+BOND avoids an otherwise energy-intensive and toxic process that other companies must endure. Additionally, unlike epoxy-based thermoset carbon fiber typically used by other cycling companies, FUSIONFIBER® waste from FORGE+BOND bike rims and other finished products is 100% recyclable. Excess materials can be chopped, trimmed, and compressed into new high-quality, high value and high-performance products, like tire levers. Little, if anything, is wasted.

Additionally, FORGE+BOND’s unique material and manufacturing process keeps the rider’s experience at the forefront. Rims made with FUSIONFIBER offer a smoother, faster, confidence-inspiring ride, and much higher impact resistance without additional weight. The long-chain nylon polymers used in the FUSIONFIBER material, makes it possible to absorb impacts through microscopic flexing in the fibers that radially dissipate shock throughout the rim. FORGE+BOND rims have been tested to withstand a minimum of 275 percent of the UCI standard for impact resistance.

The microscopic flexing allowed by the nylon material in FUSIONFIBER also provides a 50 percent or greater increase in damping while maintaining lateral stability.

“With FUSIONFIBER, we don’t have to sacrifice stiffness to improve ride quality,” said Global Marketing Director Travis Tomczak. “We target the stiffness we want for maximum control and performance and the thermoplastic matrix acts as a damper to the entire system. By constantly iterating and gathering feedback from our testing team and athletes, we’ve created a wheel that gives riders the ability to charge through any terrain with confidence and control.”

Outdoor Media Summit is changing how brands and media connect over gear. On the first day of Outdoor Media Summit, invited brands will have the opportunity to participate in the New Gear Speed Date, a unique format of product showcase.

25 brands and their PR teams will have the opportunity to pitch dozens of the outdoor industry’s most prolific gear review professionals. Brands will have 10 minutes with each member of the media, after which, the media will move on so that each brand has the chance to meet the maximum number of outlets present.

The Opening Night Reception from Outdoor Media Summit 2022, on the shores of Lake Tahoe.
“Outdoor brands and media are hungry for a new way to connect over gear,” said Yoon Kim, founder, Outdoor Media Summit. “We’re excited to see that the biggest names in the outdoor industry are choosing OMS as their next gathering place.”

Brands will be limited to either a 10×10 or 10×20 space, and will be encouraged to limit the number of products they pitch to the journalists. Only brands with new products will be invited to participate in this event.

“To see 25 new outdoor products in one afternoon is a gear reviewer’s dream,” said Adam Ruggiero, editor in chief, Gear Junkie.

Brands will be given the media list beforehand so they can research each journalist before meeting with them. At the end of the event, each journalist will vote on their favorite products. Winners will be announced on Day 3 at Outdoor Media Awards.

“The timing of this speed date event couldn’t be more perfectly aligned with some exciting product launches we have scheduled for next year,” said Anna Rawlins, marketing director, Eagles Nest Outfitters. “To get in front of so many gear reviewers in such a short amount of time makes this a no brainer for us.”

Registered brands for New Gear Speed Date include Patagonia, NEMO Equipment, ENO, Costa Del Mar, SCARPA and more. (To request an invitation for New Gear Speed Date as a brand, email yoon@outdoormediasummit.com.)

Registered media include the editor in chiefs of GearJunkie, Trails Magazine, Alpinist Magazine, and Trout Magazine as well as gear freelancers from Climbing Magazine, The Trek, ActionHub, Overland Journal, Elevation Outdoors and more. (To apply for New Gear Speed Date as media, email lucie@outdoormediasummit.com.)

The OMS team anticipates that there will be 30-40 of the outdoor industry’s most powerful gear reviewers at the event. New Gear Speed Date will be limited to 25 brands. There are only 250 tickets available for Outdoor Media Summit 2023, which has sold out every year since the first show in 2015.

As you’re probably already aware, MYSTERY RANCH is an undisputed industry-leading pack brand built on the heritage of comfortable load carriage, providing packs of all sizes and end uses to the world’s hardest users.

And they continue to evolve. The brand recently announced the Dior by Mystery Ranch — a collaboration for the Parisian fashion house’s Summer 2023 men’s collection.

Partnering with Mystery Ranch for the first time, Dior’s new backpacks and bags combine the formal with the informal, the practical with the purely aesthetic, and outdoor culture with the demands of luxury. Available on February 16, 2023, exclusively in Dior retail locations worldwide and on Dior.com. Mystery Ranch told us they are thrilled to share the details of this unlikely collaboration.

Inspired by Christian Dior’s passion and attachment to the countryside, the earth and “simple and natural things,” Kim Jones, artistic director for Dior Men, sought a partnership with Mystery Ranch to bring authentic outdoor design and functionality to the men’s summer collection.

“This collaboration is a testament to two companies that care deeply about their crafts and the communities they serve,” said Dana Gleason, founder of MYSTERY RANCH. “Working with companies like Dior is the ultimate recognition that we are doing what we set out to do: To design and build great packs and bags specific to the mission. The Dior collection is a thing of beauty. Mission accomplished.”

Drawn to the aesthetic and technical aspects of the Mystery Ranch Y-shaped 3-ZIP closure system, Jones and the Ranch design team built the bag collection around the Mystery Ranch GALLAGATOR backpack “elevating functionality to the ultimate fashion statement.” The pack offers immediate access to its multiple interior storage spaces, and compression straps on the front of the bag allow for even volume adjustment. It comes with an essential detail – a detachable, water-repellent hooded cover.

The epitome of clean, functional design, the 3-ZIP closure makes accessing pack contents as easy as 1, 2, 3. Created by Gleason in 2005 to quickly access gear while backcountry skiing, the 3-ZIP closure system has become a brand signature with an iconic look for both the urban and core outdoor user.

Gleason continued, “Born out of aggravation and necessity, the 3-ZIP design serves a unique set of families. It’s been adopted by climbers, hikers and backpackers, and now Paris.”

The Dior by Mystery Ranch collection features the Gallagator backpack, Saddle Bag, Belt Pouch (also a 3-ZIP design), Wallet, and Tactical Belt, in two colorways, featuring a CORDURA re/cor fabric that is entirely recycled, resistant and durable, and embroidered with a leather crest intermingling the seal of the two Houses.

The Saddle Bag, an emblematic Dior model, is reinvented in a version designed for the outdoors, with an ingenious double-zipped compartment.

Burton and Run DMC are excited to announce that a limited-edition run of snowboards, boots, bindings, outerwear, streetwear, bags, and accessories are now available for purchase on Burton.com.

“The idea for this collaboration came from a tightly bound friendship rooted in passion for snowboarding,” said George Burton Carpenter, about working with TJ and Jesse Mizell, sons of the late Jam Master Jay of Run DMC. “The Burton x Run DMC collection breathes life into the legacy of our fathers, or as the world knows them, Jam Master Jay of Run DMC and Jake Burton of Burton Snowboards. Through this collaboration we carry on their legacy and amplify the connection between hip-hop and snowboarding. The designs remain true to our heritage while evolving the style and culture that we intend to pass on for generations to come.”

“As a child of the 80’s who owned an original Burton V tail and listened to Run DMC on a Walkman, I could not be more stoked to see this collaboration come to fruition, “said Matt Young, president of Bravado. “Two pioneers in their fields coming together on the 50th anniversary of Hip Hop is a story worth celebrating.”

“I was born in 1975, so my teenage years were all about the rise of snowboarding and hip-hop,” said AdrianJ Margelist, Chief Brand Officer at Burton. “Being a part of designing the Burton x Run DMC collaboration was a true honor and allowed me to time travel back to my teenage years for inspiration while incorporating today’s contemporary design elements. To honor the year 1977 that Burton was founded, we created not 8, but 7 whole boards plus one board that is .7 the size. The 7.7 DJ Boards that are up for auction are once-in-a-lifetime pieces of art that honor snowboarding and hip-hop’s cultural impact, and I hope the boards will raise significant funds to benefit the inspiring work of both the Chill Foundation and the Jam Master Jay Foundation.”

Dropping next is the Mine77 x Run DMC collection available to Burton First Chair Loyalty Program members on February 14 for 24 hours of early access shopping before the official launch date on February 15. The Mine77 x Run DMC collection embodies hip-hop and snowboarding’s intertwined history of performance and culture and includes bold pieces like a Gore-Tex Tracksuit and hardgoods featuring turntables and tape cassette graphics.

Last but not least, the Burton x Run DMC collection will be available to First Chair Loyalty Program members on February 20 for 48 hours of early access shopping before the official launch date on February 22. The Burton x Run DMC collection celebrates the co-evolution of pioneering vision and style that Run DMC brought to hip-hop and Burton brought to snowboarding. This collection includes pieces inspired by Run DMC’s signature look, like the high-contrast Run DMC Frostner Jacket, a throwback hip pack, and a Process snowboard featuring a portrait of the group as base and topsheet graphics.

In 1977, Jake Burton Carpenter founded Burton Snowboards out of his Vermont barn and dedicated the rest of his life to snowboarding. Since its founding, Burton has played a pivotal role in growing snowboarding from a backyard hobby to a world-class sport by creating groundbreaking products, supporting a team of top snowboarders, and pushing resorts to allow snowboarding. Today, Burton designs and manufactures industry-leading products for snowboarding and the outdoors. As a sustainability leader within the outdoor and winter sports industries, Burton is the world’s first snowboard company to become a certified B Corporation®. Privately held and owned by Donna Carpenter, Burton’s headquarters are in Burlington, Vermont with offices in Austria, Japan, Australia, Canada and China.

“This collab means absolutely the world to me and my brother Jesse, said TJ Mizell, son of the late Jam Master Jay of Run DMC. “My brother Jesse and I have been snowboarders since we were kids. Being a part of the snowboarding culture and a collaboration that celebrates my dad’s Run DMC legacy and Jake Burton’s legacy as a snowboarding pioneer is incredible. Getting involved with the collab design process was also really cool. Fashion, snowboarding and music, specifically hip-hop, really go hand-in-hand, and that’s what my brother and I have been born into, so it’s incredible to bring our sense of style to snowboarding through this Burton x Run DMC collaboration.”

As gravel racing overtakes road biking, Rapha shifts to rapid cooling technology and plentiful pocket space in their new performance jersey.

In elite-level bike racing, nothing is permanent except change. The situation can shift in an instant, one move can make all the difference, and one day can make an entire career. Their
ability to adapt determines how long a racer stays at the front. But recently the sport has been changing in more significant ways. In the US particularly, road racing has been in decline, replaced by the emergence of endurance gravel racing. And with the shift away from the old centre-ground has come to a shift in elite-level racewear.

“When we created the Pro Team Powerweave Bib Shorts we realized that woven fabrics work extremely well,” says Harry Osborn, the designer. “They allow us to take a lighter textile but still create a compressive ‘race’ fit. There was an obvious opportunity to apply what we’d learned to our jerseys, and specifically address some of the issues faced by our gravel athletes.”

Race distances regularly run into the hundreds of miles at US gravel events so riders are required to carry everything they’ll need to sustain themselves and their machines. Midway through the legendary Unbound Gravel course in Kansas, there’s a 100km section with no resupply point of any kind. The new Pro Team Gravel Jersey was created to deliver complete self-sufficiency and extra ventilation, all at race pace. “Athletes wanted to be able to store everything – nutrition, tools, even tubeless repair kits – in a jersey that is aerodynamic but can be unzipped for added ventilation when racing on the hottest days.”
Across the shoulders, the Gravel Jersey features an aerodynamic panel construction very similar to that of the Crit Jersey. But to the front of the jersey, the priority is breathability. Lightweight, air-permeable fabrics here and under the arm promote cooling airflow for efficient temperature regulation in the heat.

But lightweight fabrics flapping open in the wind tend not to support loaded pockets, so to
balance the dual requirements of our athletes, a technical innovation was needed in the form of a new waistband design. “We’ve used a high-power lightweight woven fabric to hold the pockets tight to the body without being restrictive. The addition of a 3⁄4 zip then means that you can open the jersey wide for ventilation without compromising pocket support at all, even on really rough terrain.”

“In line with feedback from female wear testers – who included Sarah Sturm and Maghalie Rochette – we’ve added a full-length zip to the women’s version to make it easier to put on but both designs still really deliver on both ventilation and pocket stability.”

As well as aiding pocket stability, the lightweight woven fabric used on the Gravel Jersey’s back panel offers a high degree of UV protection. This is crucial at gravel races, many of which are run in extreme temperatures on courses with long sections of exposed terrain.

Purtrek, a Utah-based outdoor recreation products company, was founded by Kyle Stringham in 2017. Its flagship product is an integrated trekking pole and water filtration system that uses patented technology for users to conveniently access potable water from lakes, rivers and other sources. This is the world’s first — no one has combined a water filtration system into a trekking pole before now.

The brand also announced the selection of its trekking pole water filtration system as one of eight Award Nominees for the coveted 2022 ISPO Awards. ISPO, the leading international sports trade fair, designates awards based on a rigorous application process and review by independent editors and selected consumer experts. Its awards highlight the most outstanding products and services in sports.

MSRP for Purtrek’s complete trekking pole system is $189.99 (one pole with integrated filtration, companion pole weighted to match, and carrying bag). Replacement filters are $39.99. The poles are available for purchase on the company’s website and through a small but growing network of independent retailers in the U.S..

Purtrek founder Kyle Stringham developed the world’s first trekking pole with an integrated water filtration system over a five-year period. The system utilizes patented technology to conveniently pump and purify water from lakes, rivers, and other sources.

“Purtrek’s trekking poles help hikers and backpackers hydrate more efficiently while reducing the amount of gear they need to carry,” said Stringham. “We are honored and inspired to be recognized internationally by the ISPO Organization and community for our approach to water purification, hydration, and outdoor recreation accessibility.”

The Purtrek system works by submerging the pole end into a water source, inserting the drinking tube into a port on top of the pole’s grip, uncoupling the pump slide by twisting the pole, and moving the grip up and down. The water runs through the pole and its integrated, two-stage water filter system, and can be sipped through a drinking tube or channeled into a bottle or hydration bladder. The process only takes a few seconds.

Purtrek’s two-stage filtration system includes a large particulate pre-filter located at the lower inlet and a high-quality Micro Hollow Fiber Filter in the top third of the pole. The Hollow Fiber filter removes 99.999% of waterborne bacteria, including E. coli and salmonella, and 99.99% waterborne protozoa, including giardia and cryptosporidium.

The system delivers almost 2-times more water per pump than its competitors and filters up to 528 gallons per filter (2,000 liters).

Purtrek offers the trekking poles as a set, one pole with the integrated water filtration system and one standard trekking pole, weighted to match the filtration pole. Both poles’ telescoping shafts are made of 7075 aircraft aluminum with aluminum locking tabs and high-strength polymer plastic collars. The filtration pole uses a series of seals, valves, and O-rings to ensure clean drinking water. Both poles are adjustable up to 53″, 36” collapsed everyday storage, and the main pole is fully collapsible down to only 26″ for convenient international travel.
