When one thinks of the people protecting the waters that surround New York City, the Fire Department of New York is probably not the first group to come to mind. Living in NYC it’s easy to forget that, unless you live in the Bronx, you live on an island. Manhattan sits just off the southern tip of New York State, sandwiched by the Hudson and East rivers. Those rivers spill out into the New York Harbor, home to Staten Island, Ellis Island, and the Statue of Liberty. Brooklyn and Queens occupy the easternmost part of Long Island. They also border the East River, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Long Island Sound, and are home to countless canals, bays, harbors, and more.

Just as they do on land in the Five Boroughs, the FDNY is there, safeguarding all of New York City’s waterways, ready to answer the call from their station in Brooklyn’s Navy Yard. Aiding them in their work is an impressive fleet of patrol and emergency response vehicles, tools, and even Mustang Survival Classic Flotation Bomber Jackets.

Earlier this year, we were fortunate enough to spend a rainy winter day with them on Marine 6 patrolling the New York Harbor, and to get to know the ships, gear, and great people who keep NYC’s waterways free from harm for all of us. Thank you to the FDNY for having us and for all that you do to help ensure we can continue our urban explorations safely.

Pysivantage supplements are meant for the climber who's giving their all to get to 99% on their own, and need a hand making the final push.

The post Find Your Edge with PhysiVāntage Supplements appeared first on VANISH TODAY.

There are a million different supplements out there that claim to do everything from double your deadlift to cut your bodyweight in half overnight. But most of those claims don’t have much root in reality. These companies spend more time, energy, and precious marketing dollars preying on your insecurities than doing their research. They bank on the fact that people will buy anything that promises an easy way to write off their weaknesses.

That’s wherePhysiVāntage offers a refreshing perspective. This team — led by world-class climber, trusted coach, and sports science researcher Eric Hörst — knows that hard work is what gets you 99% of the way to where you want to be. If you’re an athlete who loves what you do, not just the reward of having done it, chances are pretty good that you’re already putting in that quantity and quality of effort. PhysiVāntage doesn’t want to take the value of that time away from you. The process is worth at least as much as the end result. Quick fixes (if they even have a smidge of merit) rob you of the growth you gain along the way.

To that end, PhysiVāntage isn’t here to make up for gaps in your training. These supplements are meant for the climber that’s giving their all to get to 99% on their own and need a hand making the final push. Sometimes that 1% does make a difference between snagging the send and punting off on the final move with the chains so close you could cry. That’s especially common as athletes start to reach the upper echelons of their sport, when progress starts to slow down and come in bite-sized pieces rather than giant gulps. Every little optimization adds up to bring you closer to your full potential.

So if you’re looking for an easy out, keep searching. Physivantage supplements won’t work miracles, which is the only hope you’d ever have for bypassing plain ol’ hard work. But that’s for your own good. This company cares about helping you dial in the details to be your best self, and shortcuts aren’t the way. If you’re ready to raise the ceiling on how far your best efforts can take you, on the other hand, then PhysiVāntage could very well put a little extra wind in your sails.

Hörst and his team don’t take the easy way either. Extensive research goes into the making of each product to make sure that each ingredient serves an actual purpose, no fluff or fillers to be found. And you don’t have to just take their word for it; every product description includes multiple paragraphs on the science behind the supplement, citations and all. Everything you need, nothing you don’t — because PhysiVāntage doesn’t have anything to prove here. They just do the hard work of figuring out what works so that you don’t have to. You have your own hard work to focus on.

The current lineup includes supplements for both rounding up your reserves pre-activity and refilling your tank in the aftermath. Check out some of the newest additions as well as the old reliables that have been lining the shelves of climbers’ pantries (or gear boxes on the go) for years already.

The New Kids

Mag-ATP

It’s hard enough for non-athletes to get enough magnesium thanks to most agricultural practices these days. Then add on how much magnesium athletes lose in the process of heavy training, and there’s very little chance that you’re meeting your needs. That’s important because Hörst notes that, “for individuals who participate in a strength training program, a suboptimal or even deficient magnesium status may lead to inefficient energy metabolism and decreased endurance.” On the other hand, “higher intake of magnesium has been shown to be associated with less oxygen needs and better cardiorespiratory indices.” In other words, meeting your magnesium needs leads to less strain on your respiratory and cardiovascular systems. Mag-ATP offers 1000mg of magnesium malate per serving to help you get there.

Redux HP

How often do you pop a few ibuprofen to get through leftover soreness, mitigate a headache mid-session, or quiet a nagging injury? While there’s nothing wrong with a dose of Vitamin I every once in a while, chronic use of painkillers does a number on your insides. There’s a better way to aid recovery on a regular basis or find a little extra relief when you feel a niggle coming on. The holy supplement triumvirate of tart cherry, ginger, and turmeric come together in Redux HP to keep you from reaching for traditional painkillers all the time. Tart cherry is linked to “attenuated muscle catabolism, reduced immune and inflammatory stress, better maintained redox balance, and increased performance in aerobically trained individuals.” Ginger then takes a hard swing at inflammation, and turmeric battles stiff joints and muscle soreness.

The Old Reliables

Supercharged Collagen

Collagen’s been a bit of a buzzword in the health sphere lately, but there’s a big difference between the beauty industry supplements you’ll find at the grocery store and PhysiVāntage’s take on collagen. Their Supercharged Collagen supplement targets joints and connective tissues with animo acids glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline to strengthen them against cumulative stress or rehab them in the aftermath of injury. Each serving includes 50mg of Vitamin C, which “doubles the markers of collagen synthesis” so nothing’s going to waste. I like to mix in the vanilla or chocolate flavors into my morning oatmeal before big climbing days for a breakfast that tastes like dessert and preps me for the day ahead.

Weapons-Grade Whey

If you don’t already know how big a role protein supplements play in recouping your muscles after a hard workout, you’ve been living under a rock. Nothing new there. The difference here is that Weapons-Grade Whey goes straight to the source: just whey protein isolates and micellar casein. They’re designed to piggy back off of one another in two stages: “Phase One is a swift initial spike of amino acids into the blood stream as whey protein isolate rapidly digests. A more protracted second-phase release of amino acids results from more slowly digesting micellar casein protein.” Minimal ingredients means you can add it to almost anything for a delish post-workout snack to get to immediate work on your tired muscles or a bedtime munch for sounder sleep. My new favorite to bring to the crag and shovel down right after the last pitch: protein cereal. Just dump a scoop into a Tupperware with your favorite cereal (Cheerios are the OG) then add water when you’re ready to chow down. It hits the spot with barely any effort.

Powerplex Plant-Based Protein Complex

Not to fear, plant-based posse, you’re welcome here too. Pea and rice protein take the place of whey in Powerplex for 20g of plant-based protein. I’m all for inclusivity, but the real kicker is the that Powerplex is the first of its kind to try and replicate natural collagen. Two specific amino acids — Glycine & Proline — serve the same purpose minus the animal source. Vitamin C boosts the collagen response, alongside Creatine Monohydrate “to support recycling of ATP during powerful exercise” and Beta Alanine “to boast muscle carnosine content: the first line of defense against intracellular acidosis during sustained high-power exercise”.

Crush Pre-Workout

Yeah, you can drink a liter of coffee before hopping on your project. But ten bucks says that the jitters will shake you off before you make much progress. Crush keeps the energy but leaves the Elvis leg. L-theanine, L-taurine, and L-tyrosine take the sharp edge off caffeine so that it’s all focus and no restlessness. L-theanine “improves attention span, enhances the ability to process visual information, and increases accuracy when switching from one task to another”, while L-tyrosine counters blood flow restriction caused by caffeine. Hörst then added L-tyrosine on the basis that when “compared to placebo, it was found to improve cognitive flexibility and working memory during mentally demanding tasks, as well as help sleep-deprived individuals stay alert longer.” Not saying you should try and skimp on sleep the night before, but Crush has your back in case things get a little wild.

Endure X

There’s nothing like a flash-pump to put a quick damper on the rest of your big plans for the day. The beets in Endure X work to improve blood flow for better power-endurance on a long route or a stacked day. Beet supplements are hot right now for good reason: they increase nitric oxide in the body, which “improves body flow via vasodilation, most importantly in poorly perfused fast-twitch muscle fibers, elevates muscle oxygenation, and improves endothelia function”. But that’s only if your body can absorb all those nutrients in the first place. Beets and their juices are tough to digest, especially during exercise, because of their high fiber and fructans content, so PhysiVāntage whittles it down to pure Beetroot extract for an effective supplement. Citrulline Malate then hops on board for faster ATP reproduction between hard bouts based on studies all across the athletic spectrum.

Flow Electrolytes and BCAAs

Climbers don’t sweat the same as endurance athletes, but that doesn’t mean you’re not losing electrolytes. Sodium’s not the only thing you need to replenish, either. Potassium, magnesium, and calcium also run low during exercise but are needed to prevent cramping and premature muscle fatigue. Flow features a lower amount of sodium compared to other electrolyte supplements for sport but higher levels of the others based on climbing’s unique tax on the body, plus BCAAS to initiate recovery before you even stop.

Mental strength training from Inside Out Athlete helps high-achievers bridge the gap between mind and body for better performance and -- more importantly -- better health.

Mental strength training from Inside Out Athlete bridges the gap between mind and body for better performance and — more importantly — better health.

If you’re reading this, one thing’s for sure: you’re far more than just a bag of bones. Your body’s on display, but your brain makes it all possible from behind the scenes. There’s no making anything happen on the outside if everything on the inside’s not on board with the plan. In fact, there’d be no plan at all.

For athletes whose bodies take center stage, or even pay the bills, it’s easy to forget that both parts have to work in tandem. Just because the body puts on the show doesn’t mean that the mind can simply sit pretty. And if an athlete does decide to go that route, focusing entirely on the external, there’s very little chance they’ll ever reach their full potential.

There’s a cap on what physical training can produce by itself. There’s only so much that the body can handle, and that limit varies from person to person. Crossing that barrier leads straight down the road to overtraining, energy deficiency, and the exact opposite of what you’re aiming for: poorer performance than you started out with in the first place. While frustrating, that’s something we should ultimately be grateful for; the body knows its limits and protects itself from permanent damage by shutting down everything it regards as “extra”… no matter your opinion on the matter.

More isn’t always better. Engage your mind to keep from crossing the line.

Not only that, but athletes who funnel all their energy into physical training never get the chance to deploy one of their greatest strengths: individuality. Yeah, no two competitors look or move the exact same (especially as body diversity in sports is finally on the rise). But there comes a point when everyone’s been through the same rigamarole. For every degree of physical difference between one athlete and the next, there’s only more where that came from on the mental side. Tapping into their brainwaves helps athletes find their unique edge within a stacked field.

A new speciality has arrived on the scene to help athletes get in better touch with their brains. I say new, but sports psychology has been around for decades. Rather, it’s the public eye that’s finally opening up to the idea. With the barrage of mental health issues arising in the wake of the COVID crisis, people are finally starting to understand that the mind deserves just as much respect as the body.

Lucie, sports psychology consultant with Inside Out Athlete, takes a holistic approach to mental strength training for that very reason. Just like the consequences of overtraining don’t disappear the second an athlete wraps up a training session, neither do the benefits of learning new mental skills. The end goal might be to improve performance, but that’s far from the only outcome. Optimal athletic performance requires motivation, focus, confidence, and resilience… but so do the ins and outs of daily life. It all feeds into the same river.

Lucie is an elite rock climber and ultrarunner in the Western Slope of Colorado.

Lucie primarily works with outdoor athletes, who don’t get as much professional attention as those in more traditional sports. Climbers, runners, bikers, and skiers often find themselves out on their own when it comes to athletic development. That go-it-alone mindset is a product of both the independent nature of these sports and the general lack of available support.

But she’s gone that route herself, and it’s only led to unnecessary struggles and missed opportunities. There’s a reason that most athletes in organized sports don’t coach themselves in any capacity — they’re in too deep to get a healthy perspective.

A combination of education and experience puts Lucie in a position of expertise here. She’s felt the pain of pushing her body past its limits in a desperate effort to stand out, and the limitations of boiling her identity down to just one label. For better or for worse, the repercussions have completely changed her athletic trajectory. These days, she knows how to take back her power by spreading out the load. Now it’s your turn. Reach out to learn more about the mental strength training process and how a closer relationship between body and mind can raise the ceiling on your potential.

It’s been a long pandemic pause without many of our favorite traditions and gatherings that usually punctuate the seasons, but it’s finally time to start reintroducing the celebrations that have taken a backseat. And the 5Point Adventure Film Festival is back on in full force for the first time since 2019.

Outdoor adventure is one thing that hasn’t necessarily stopped for COVID, so there’s no shortage of stories on what’s been going on in the meantime or new perspectives that have bubbled to the surface. Ten different films will premiere across a variety of venues in Carbondale, Colorado, April 21-24. Sprinkled in between showings are panel discussions focused on how to find the intersection between the chasing the lifestyles that light us up and responding to concerns like social justice, equity, health, and accessibility in the outdoor industry that put up barriers to entry.

“It’s been three years since the 5Point community was last able to come together in-person to celebrate our shared values and the art of inspirational storytelling, and who could imagine how the world would change during that hiatus and how it would shape us with new resilience and perspective to forge a positive path ahead,” said 5Point Film executive director, Luis Yllanes. “We are humbled and excited to showcase some incredible filmmaking, but most importantly bring our community together after all this time for that vital connection that sparks ideas, collaboration, sharing, and inspiration.”

Gain entry to the whole weekend from April 21-24, 2022, for $365 at 5Point Film, or pick from individual events or screenings.

Film Lineup

Learning To Drown: directed by the highly acclaimed Felt Soul Media team (Ben Knight, Travis Rummel) Learning To Drown tells the remarkable story of snowboarder Jess Kimura.

The River Runner: The story of Scott Lindgren’s 20-year quest to be the first person to paddle the four great rivers that originate from Tibet’s sacred Mount Kailash. This Saturday matinee feature film presentation will include a Q&A with special guests from the film.

TORN: In 1999, climber Alex Lowe was lost in a deadly avalanche on Mount Shishapangma. Surviving the avalanche was Alex’s best friend and climbing partner, Conrad Anker, who married Alex’s widow and help raise his sons. From filmmaker, photographer, and National Geographic Explorer Max Lowe, TORN turns the lens on his own family, as the body of his father is uncovered 17 years after his death. This Sunday matinee feature film presentation will include a Q&A with special guests from the film.

The Ballad of Pecos Hank: A lonesome musician down on his luck and in love with Mother Nature risked what he had to traverse Tornado Alley in search of the world’s most violent weather. World Premiere.

A Baffin Vacation: Erik Boomer and Sarah McNair-Landry set off on a bold multi-sport 45-day expedition traveling through the remote landscape of Baffin Island in search of stunning cliffs to climb and unexplored rivers to whitewater kayak. World Premiere.

This Is Beth: Rock climber Beth Rodden is one of the most prolific athletes in climbing history, with multiple free ascents of El Capitan and first ascents of cutting-edge lines to her name. ‘This is Beth’ takes an intimate look beneath the forward-facing success of her career, diving into Beth’s grapple with body image and cruel self-talk and celebrating how she transformed this dynamic to rediscover the love of her sport. World premiere and a 5Point Film Fund recipient.

Before I Die: Following the untimely death of their father to Early-onset Alzheimer’s, the Bussell family grapples with the life-altering decision of whether to find out if they too carry the gene. Out of the family’s five children, Tristan Bussell, 36, is the only one who decides to take the DNA test. This uplifting documentary short focuses on how those test results profoundly changed the way Tristan chooses to live his life. A 5Point Film Fund recipient.

An Accidental Life: On October 11, 2017, in Yosemite on El Capitan, while at the peak of her mountaineering prowess, Quinn Brett experienced one of the most traumatic accidents in the history of rock climbing. The lessons from such horror are only shared among those who survive and not only did Quinn astonishingly live to tell the tale but even more to endure the irreparable aftermath. Over time and with great effort she finds different ways to move in the wilderness, a worthwhile job opportunity emerges, and a spark of romance returns. To forgive herself for all that she’s lost Quinn must return to her accident, confront her ghosts, and reveal the beauty of what remains. This Friday matinee feature film presentation will include a Q&A with special guests from the film.

A Thousand Casts: Throughout the course of Oliver White’s life fly fishing has been at the root of a series of once-in-a-lifetime events. What started as physical therapy led to the financial district, a business opportunity, and a near-death situation. His pursuit of fish on the fly now takes him to the mythical, magical country of Bhutan to do what he does best – figure things out.

Attack and Release: After moving with his family to the U.S. from Sri Lanka, Ranga lost his father to an unexpected heart attack. Coping with the loss eventually led him to Montana, where he was drawn to the magic of fly fishing and the solace of the river. Through being in nature and meeting the challenges of his journey, he learned the importance of mindfulness and living life with an open heart. World Premiere.

Panel Highlights

QUESTION THE SELF. New York Times bestselling author Jedidiah Jenkins for a live recording of his hit podcast, Question The Self. He’ll be joined by seasoned documentary filmmaker Taylor Rees for a two-way discussion about ego, love, friendship, and how to balance a life of creative work, adventure, and family. Stick around for a book reading and Q&A with Jedidiah after the podcast.

FINDING FLOW WITH JEREMY JENSEN co-founder of Outwild and host of the Adventurepreneur Playbook. Flow is an optimal state of consciousness, where we feel and perform our best. It’s where we feel the most alive and tend to have our most meaningful experiences. In this workshop, we’ll explore how to harness the state of flow to boost creativity, productivity, and overall well-being. The workshop will cover general flow science, identify the key flow triggers, and end with a mountain bike ride at Prince Creek.

THE ADVENTURE FILMMAKER PITCH EVENT, PRESENTED BY STIO. A central part of the mission of 5Point is nurturing and supporting the next generation of adventure filmmakers. The festival will host its first inaugural Adventure Filmmakers Pitch Event where five finalists will pitch their concepts to a jury for the chance to win a $15,000 prize. Judges include Taylor Rees, Britta Erickson, and Liz Barrett.

THE ROAD TO AN EQUITABLE OUTDOORS. Outdoor communities—and the media that reflect its values—have rallied to increase diversity, elevate equity, and honor inclusivity since 2020’s resurgence of the social justice movement. Films have been funded and programs have been launched, but we haven’t yet reached our summit. What about cyclical and sustainable justice in media for underserved and historically marginalized communities? Moderator Dani Reyes-Acosta will connect with filmmakers, athletes, brand managers, and media critics Mardi Fuller, Connor Ryan, Conor Hall, Alex Showerman, and Massimo Alpian in a community conversation taking stock of their achievements as much as the road ahead.

5Point Adventures

Get to know the creators and speakers in their element. Clinics and events on trail running, Plein air arts, fly fishing, and more give festival-goers the chance to strip away the barriers between the stage and the audience to share in the activities that put us all on the same level in the end.

5Point Film Fund

Each of the projects you see in the festival started out as an idea in need of support to get off the ground. Now it’s time for the next set of big dreams to find a leg up. If you’re interested in putting your own ideas for future films out there, look out for the official call for submissions during the festival and information on applying for funding.

Because of all the limitations on long-distance trips, most people seem to have the same idea to just avoid the hassle and stay close to home. But the domestic travel trend might be making it hard to come up with options around you that still give you that sense of novelty... and aren't entirely booked out already. The solution? Embrace your human-powered capabilities.

With COVID not even close to being in the rearview after more than two years of psychological scramble and now the war in Ukraine sending shockwaves of worry through the travel industry on top of it, summer travel plans are starting to look a little different than expected, again. International travel might be off the table completely depending on where you’re headed, and gas prices might be making cross-country road trips equally unrealistic.

On one hand maybe that’s the least of our concerns given the state of global climate change, but on the other, pent-up stress doesn’t help anyone. If you can step away long enough to refresh your senses and detach from the headlines, you’ll probably come back more motivated to handle whatever disaster strikes next.

The solution? Embrace your human-powered capabilities. Guided trips and self-guided itineraries from VCT Bicycling Vacations and Country Walkers could help you piece together an adventure that doesn’t take you far from your homebase. This could be your chance to narrow your exploratory focus, maybe find a little more appreciation for your own neck of the woods that hasn’t made the cut before. The best trips are simply the ones that yank our noses away from the grindstone for long enough to remember that there’s more to life than news and to-do’s – and there’s no reason you can’t find that kind of destination closer than you think.

There's a big difference between winter and spring skiing conditions, but there's room to appreciate the perks of both. And with more time in the day, you'll have time to shut down the slopes and still celebrate après-style.

Spring skiing is in full effect nationwide. The last days of winter might be coming to an end, but that doesn’t mean skiing is over, especially as global climate change is dragging winter out well into May and June in the high country. We love deep winter skiing, of course we do. But the beauty and benefits of longer days, warmer temps, and slushy snow have their place. And one of those places is on the deck. With more time in the day, you’ll have time to shut down the slopes and still celebrate après-style. Even better, spring gives you the chance to tie a nice bow on each adventure during the special span of time between your boots coming off and the sun going down that doesn’t exist in short winter days. Yes, the snowfall will start to taper off pretty soon here after a few more spring storm cycles — but at the same time, the days are longer, the sun is brighter, visibility is unlimited, and the snow can be perfect for beginners and powder seekers alike.

Here’s a pro tip for both Eastern and Western skiers: If you’re in Aspen/Snowmass or the Catskills this spring, stop by the Select Slopeside Popups to wrap up the day with a spritz from Select Aperitivo and live music as a backdrop for airing out your goggle tan lines over stories about that perfectly corned couloir line you had to hike to to earn the day’s libations.

The brand is based on a slice of Venetian culture that looks pretty similar to how we end the best ski days here in the States — winding down with a drink in hand and letting the stories from the day tumble out with abandon. While the country was pulling itself out of the wreckage from WWI, Italians needed something to take the edge off of reentry into the “new normal”… and if that doesn’t sound familiar, then perhaps you’ve been living under a rock since 2019. The same drink that helped them piece their lives back together and find a reason to smile again might just help us do the same.

We’re excited to share the latest installment of Vanish’s Wild Ingenuity™ interview series. This week’s edition features our conversation with the esteemed designer and creative, Lindsey Thornburg. Though she’s based in New York these days, Lindsey’s always called Montana and Aspen, Colorado home. With these outdoor roots in mind, it’s safe to say Lindsey’s no stranger to an unrelenting winter. In fact, much of Lindsey’s outerwear work is catalyzed by a “dedication to staying warm and being unique”. As you’ll discover in our exclusive interview, Lindsey has been collaborating with Pendleton Woolen Mills for nearly the last decade and is the first designer in the more than 150-year history of the company to have been allowed to cut into their blankets. The result of her collaboration with Pendelton has come in the form of masterfully designed cloaks that have proven very popular, even amongst the likes of celebrities such as Blake Lively, Kate Hudson, Rihanna, Drew Barrymore, and Meryl Streep.

As a lifelong Oregonian with a burning affinity for Pendelton’s work, I can safely say there are more Pendelton blankets in my extended family than family members. It’s truly an honor to get to interview Lindsey Thornburg and tap into her mind with the Wild Ingenuity™ lens. We hope you enjoy reading Lindsey’s thoughtful answers on Nature-Culture-Future as much as we did!

Tell us a bit about yourself, your company, and how your products are inspired by nature.

My name is Lindsey Thornburg. I’m a New York-based fashion designer from Montana and Colorado. I’m known best for my collaboration with Pendleton. I’m the first company in 110 years Pendleton has allowed cut into their blankets. I don’t really have a strategy, but I like being outside and I’ve always made clothing that’s reflected what I like to do. I like nature and I like looking cool and being cozy in nature.

CULTURE
Where do you go for inspiration and what out there in current culture is creating the best or most interesting vibes to motivate you?

I love being outside. I love making art outside with groovy people that like the psychedelic aspects of nature. No one else’s vibe motivates me. Even if I’m inspired. I have to motivate myself. What we do is so specific but I think there’s a lot of people doing clever things on the internet right now. I love clever good design even if it’s out of my wheelhouse. I love things that can last forever and aren’t trend based.

FUTURE
What does the future look like for your work and what’s on your mind as you look forward?

I want a store in Aspen :). I went to high school there and it would be a fun homecoming to have my creative endeavors take me back.

The year 2020 has thrown America through the wringer. Now that coronavirus is dragging into the winter, the strange times seem to keep getting stranger. With social interactions increasingly stifled, many people are wondering how they’re going to stay sane through the winter.

Our team at Vanish has noted that the individuals who thrive in tough times are bold hearted and passion-filled. The type of people always looking for a new outlet to sink their restless energy in. They carry with them the last vestiges of that great pioneering spirit, which defined generations of iron-willed American trailblazers, mountaineers, and adventurers of every stripe. Salomon’s trail running shoes are built for that type of people.
